Beverley Is Queen of The Knight

Beverley Knight Bodyguard

Feast your eyes upon the promo pic for the musical The Bodyguard which now has a new leading lady in the form of our very own Beverley Knight. The singer recently made her West End debut in the role of Rachel Marron, popularised by the late great Whitney Houston. Bev took the reigns from the supremely talented Heather Headley who has now headed back to the US to start preparations for the Broadway version of the musical. When asked if she was nervous about the role Beverley told Blackhair magazine:

“Yeah! And I think I should’ve been. If I hadn’t been nervous, something wouldn’ve have been right. It’s such a switch of gear for me. If it had just been a case of ‘can I sing these 10 songs?’ it would’ve been no problem. But it’s not – it’s much more  than that.”

I saw The Bodyguard musical last year and was blown away by the production (read my recap here). I’m a huge fan of Bev and I’m confident that with her vocal ability, stage presence and charisma she’ll do a sterling job.

Must See: Bodyguard The Musical

Bodyguard The Musical

So a few weeks ago I was acting all nonchalant and indifferent about the fact that The Bodyguard was being made into a musical.  Although I planned to see it, I made it clear that I wasn’t a huge fan of the film to begin with, and my only intention was to satisfy a pang of nostalgia I’ve been feeling since Whitney passed away.  And yet, last Friday I found myself feverishly anticipating the show as I headed to the Adelphi Theatre in sub zero temperatures.

The performance started just after 7.30 and it literally started with a bang. Broadway veteran, Heather Headley, plays the role of Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) and wasted no time in letting the audience know that she meant business setting the proceedings with a rousing rendition of soft rock belter Queen of The Night. As the mostly middle aged/middle class audience clapped along in unison, Headley confidently strutted across the stage in a fitted pair of satin trousers and embellished bustier. From that moment I knew I was in for a great time.

Cocoa Preview: Bodyguard The Musical

When the film the Bodyguard was released in 1992  (according to Google) it was during the height of my Whitney fandom. I’ve been a fan ever since she emerged on the scene looking all cherubic with an angelic voice to match in the early 80s, but there’s no doubt that Nippy’s star power ascended to the heavens when she starred alongside Kevin Costner in the sappy romantic thriller ‘The Bodyguard’.
