I’m in my late thirties and no longer a skinny minnie, so I don’t consider myself part of Topshop’s core demographic. And that’s perfectly fine to be honest. But although I no longer slavishly hand over my hard earned cash for a slither of overpriced fabric at their stores, it doesn’t mean the brand is no longer on my radar. On the contrary, I find myself continually peeking at the upward trajectory of Sir Philip Green’s multi-million fashion empire. And you know the main thing I’ve noticed? Topshop’s tendency to hire black models to head their campaigns. Whether’s its Jourdan Dunn’s iconic On The Move Campaign or Nyasha Matonhodze’s stunning A/W 11 campaign , not to mention Ajak Deng’s campaign – I can’t honestly think of any other high street brand that attempts to balance the scales of under-representation. Hot on the heels is their new SS12 campaign featuring yup, you guessed it – black models. I’m not familiar with the names of the models, but they’re certainly working it. More of the same please Phil!
